California LA

State bug detectives are fanning across a Los Angeles suburban neighborhood, setting traps and taking tissue samples from backyard citrus trees in a frantic effort to stop the spread of a tree-killing disease detected there last week.

Walking door-to-door in a half-mile radius, ag officials are hanging traps and scouting for potentially diseased citrus trees. By the weekend, they had surveyed 435 properties, found 178 host plants and took samples from 57 trees that potentially exhibited the symptoms: yellowing of new shoots, misshapen fruit and leaf blotching.

So far only one case of huanglongbing, more commonly called citrus greening, has been detected. The disease has caused billions of dollars in damage across Florida since 2005.

The state is seeking emergency authority to spray trees in the area.

Mexico

Next Mexico president could face a drug cartel 'Vietnam' April 01, 2012 7:36 PM
BY JOHN VAUGHN - BAJO EL SOL EDITOR
Once the new president's in office, we may see Mexico follow a new strategy in the war on drugs. At present, some people might likened it to a Vietnam for current President Felipe Calderon.
Tens of thousands — more than 50,000 by some counts — have died in drug-related violence, despite Calderon having called in the military against the drug cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006.
One of three leading contenders to succeed him has been quoted as saying he'd pull the troops out of the fight. Two others say they wouldn't negotiate with the cartels but say the government has made mistakes in its campaign against the traffickers.
Meanwhile, two former presidents — who presumably still have some influence in Mexico — have called for legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana use. Could it be Mexico will use more finesse and less force against drugs once the new president takes office in December?
If so, it could be doing so without the blessing of its neighbor to the north.

American Legion Yuma Post 19 - 2012 Egg Hunt

The Egg Hunt Held Saturday March 31, 2012 was an Eggzargered Success.
Jenny Rochester has been bringing her sons to the annual American Legion Post 19 Community Children's Easter Party for the past 19 years.

“It is exciting, it's fun, and my kids really like it,” she said during the event, which was held Saturday.

Her 8-year-old son Jimmy enjoyed the party, and ran as fast as he could to get eggs during the egg hunt in the area behind the H. H. Donkersley building.

“I did it quick,” he said, adding that the best part of the party was “eating the candy.”

Justin Rochester, 15, is to old to go on an Easter egg hunt, but he still comes to the event to volunteer. He said it is enjoyable watching the kids hunt for eggs, “because they will run passed so many. It's funny.”

In addition to receiving six plastic eggs that were filled with candy, the hundreds of kids who came to the event were treated to corn dogs, cookies and cupcakes. They also got a chance to take photos with the Easter Bunny, get their faces painted or ride the train.

“Nobody is too old to ride the train,” said Bob Carey, an executive board member for Post 19, with a laugh.

Post 19 continues to host the event every year “so the kids have a safe place to go get Easter eggs,” he added.

One big change this year was the substitution of candy filled plastic eggs for the traditional painted chicken eggs.

“It's working out real good,” Carey said. “This year every kid got six eggs and a ticket to come up on the stage and pick out a toy they wanted.”

The members of the American Legion especially enjoy the free events they host for kids, Carey said.

“We love to do this. The Legion is not just a bunch of old guys sitting around and doing nothing.”

But to continue to offer free events like the annual Easter party, the Legion needs the support of the community, Carey added.

“Come and support the Legion by coming to our dinner every Thursday night from 4:30 to 7 p.m. That helps support these programs.”

Cesar Chavez Day 2012

To 16-year-old Jose Lopez, walking with his parents in a labor union march Saturday, the point of Cesar Chavez Day is to honor laborers who worked in the fields.

To marcher Dan King, the holiday celebrates someone who stood up for all working people.

And to Iggy Ponce De Leon, holding a sign bearing Chavez’s face, it is a “grateful day.” He has worked as a union grocery clerk for 34 years and sees Chavez as the father of the labor movement.

California passed legislation in 2000 to recognize the birthday of Chavez, the Mexican-American union leader who in 1962 co-founded what became the United Farm Workers and brought attention to the plight of agriculture workers.

Chavez died in 1993 at age 66 and is buried at the National Chavez Center in Kern County.

This year, the legal holiday was Friday, but events will continue through April. From Monday through Apr. 30, the University of California San Diego will host a photography exhibit, in addition to other activities. That calendar is here.

At least nine other states celebrate Chavez’s memory with optional or commemorative days on March 31.

On May 5, a new Navy dry cargo ship will be christened and named for Cesar Chavez in a San Diego ceremony. Built at the General Dynamics-NASSCO shipyard on San Diego Bay, the ship belongs to a class traditionally named for famous American explorers, pioneers and visionaries.

On Saturday, the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council organized a march from Cesar Chavez Park in Barrio Logan to downtown San Diego. An estimated 1,000 people participated, most affiliated with local labor unions.

The group walked down Harbor Drive at about 11 a.m., closing northbound lanes. Signs carried by the marchers bore messages such as “Reclaim the American Dream” and “People Before Profits.” They shouted chants including, “Who has the power? We have the power.”

They swarmed in and out of the Marriott Marquis hotel on Harbor Drive, without incident. They also planned to go to eateries in the Gaslamp to hand out cards protesting the common practice of not providing paid sick days for restaurant workers.

Marcher Michelle Wise of El Cajon said she sees parallels between Chavez’s fight for field laborers and today’s workplace.

A member of the United Domestic Workers, Wise toils as an in-home caregiver. The state has proposed to reduce spending on in-home support services.

“All they need is a fair break,” she said, speaking of today’s workers. “They need fair wages for a day’s work.”

Young Jose Lopez’s mother is in the janitors union, and he is interested in seeing that they get fair treatment. “People see them as less than other people,” Jose said.

What does he want to do when he grows up? Computers.
