American Legion Yuma Post 19 - 2012 Egg Hunt

The Egg Hunt Held Saturday March 31, 2012 was an Eggzargered Success.
Jenny Rochester has been bringing her sons to the annual American Legion Post 19 Community Children's Easter Party for the past 19 years.

“It is exciting, it's fun, and my kids really like it,” she said during the event, which was held Saturday.

Her 8-year-old son Jimmy enjoyed the party, and ran as fast as he could to get eggs during the egg hunt in the area behind the H. H. Donkersley building.

“I did it quick,” he said, adding that the best part of the party was “eating the candy.”

Justin Rochester, 15, is to old to go on an Easter egg hunt, but he still comes to the event to volunteer. He said it is enjoyable watching the kids hunt for eggs, “because they will run passed so many. It's funny.”

In addition to receiving six plastic eggs that were filled with candy, the hundreds of kids who came to the event were treated to corn dogs, cookies and cupcakes. They also got a chance to take photos with the Easter Bunny, get their faces painted or ride the train.

“Nobody is too old to ride the train,” said Bob Carey, an executive board member for Post 19, with a laugh.

Post 19 continues to host the event every year “so the kids have a safe place to go get Easter eggs,” he added.

One big change this year was the substitution of candy filled plastic eggs for the traditional painted chicken eggs.

“It's working out real good,” Carey said. “This year every kid got six eggs and a ticket to come up on the stage and pick out a toy they wanted.”

The members of the American Legion especially enjoy the free events they host for kids, Carey said.

“We love to do this. The Legion is not just a bunch of old guys sitting around and doing nothing.”

But to continue to offer free events like the annual Easter party, the Legion needs the support of the community, Carey added.

“Come and support the Legion by coming to our dinner every Thursday night from 4:30 to 7 p.m. That helps support these programs.”
