Residents reported explosions from grenades and gunfire in different areas of the city.
A series of blockades quickly sprang up afterwards along some of the most heavily used roads.
Mexican military helicopters were seen in the skies with one landing near a busy shopping center.
Reynosa city officials issued an alert on Twitter asking residents to be careful.
The American Consulate in Matamoros also issued an alert on Twitter warning of sporadic gunbattles in Reynosa.
Tamaulipas officials confirmed that the first gun batlle took place following a raid at a home in the Colonira Las Fuentes in the city's westside around 9:15 a.m. Friday.
One soldier and one gunmen were killed in the battle.
State officials said that the remaining gunmen fled the scene leaving behind a series of blockdades some of Reynosa's main roadways that took almost two hours to clear out.
Soldiers later located a group of armed men in a rural community just outside the city where a deadly firefight ended with four gunmen being killed.
Tamaulipas officials reported that soldiers also raided a home in the Fraccionamiento Los Cerros where they seized four pickup trucks, an armored BMW, weapons and ammunition.
Neither the names of the late soldier nor the slain gunmen have been released at this time but the incidents all remain under investigation.
