The Yuma area's younger Rotarians are doing their part to help those who want to become citizens.
Members of Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored service club for men and women between 18 and 30, recently began teaching classes to people studying to take their citizenship exams.
The free four-week classes began the week of June 11 at, but Rotaract counselor Maria Guzman said space is still available for additional students. Classes are 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays at Room 106 at Arizona Western College.
Over the four weeks of the classes, Rotaract members teach U.S. history and government to students to prepare them to take the 100-question exam administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service.
“Rotaract is a community service club,” she said, and the classes are a way “for them to contribute to the community in the spirit of Rotary.”
The classes also benefit the Rotaract members who teach them, she said, since they are education majors in college who are gaining some practical experience in their chosen fields.
Depending on demand, Guzman said, Rotaract will offer again at AWC as well as in Somerton. For more information about the classes, call Guzman at 314-9454.
