Criminal Suspect Burnt and Lynched By Mob in Chiapas, Mexico

A man was beaten and set on fire by a mob for allegedly robbing a taxi outside San Juan Chamula, a city in southeastern Mexico, prosecutors said.

The incident occurred Sunday night in the Tzotzil Indian community of Bechijtic, located about five kilometers (3.1 miles) from San Cristobal de Las Casas, the Chiapas state Attorney General’s Office said.

The suspected criminal “lost his life as a result of the wounds caused by blunt objects and burns all over his body,” the AG’s office said in a statement.

Three subjects robbed and beat a taxi driver in Bechijtic around 8:45 p.m. Sunday and fled the scene, investigators said.

The taxi driver asked residents for help and a mob chased the three men, capturing one of the subjects.

The man was taken to the community, where the mob attacked him and set him on fire, the AG’s office said.

Investigators are trying to identify the assailants, the AG’s office said.
