Starting today, there’s a new way to get to Los Algodones, Mexico, a small town just south of the border.

Yuma County Area Transit (YCAT) buses are now taking passengers to the Andrade Port of Entry, which is located across the border from Algodones and just a few minutes from Yuma.

The border town caters to thousands of year-round and winter residents of Yuma who go to the town seeking medications, medical or dental care or to eat and shop.

The new Blue Route 5 service is the first public transit connection to this port of entry, according to the Yuma County Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority, the agency that oversees YCAT.

YCIPTA is implementing other "new and improved" transit services beginning today 10/22/13.

The biggest service change includes new evening service on NightCAT. Passengers from various areas of Yuma and eastern Imperial counties will now be able to get home from the nearest YCAT bus stop starting at 7:15 p.m., 8:45 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. in the evening, Monday through Friday.

With advance reservations made by calling (928) 783-2235 prior to 6 p.m., NightCAT will pick up passengers at the following locations: Downtown Yuma Transit Center, Yuma Regional Medical Center (24th Street/Avenue A-westbound), West Yuma Transfer Hub, Cocopah Casino, Paradise Casino, Quechan Casino Resort, San Luis (Main Street/C Street-northbound) and Somerton (Main Street/State Avenue-southbound).

Also, a new scheduled stop will be added at Yuma International Airport for those flying into Yuma later in the evening to provide better transportation.

Turquoise Route 10 will be rescheduled to serve both Yuma Palms Regional Center and Imperial Valley Mall in El Centro, Calif.

With winter visitors returning to Yuma, the Brown Route 3 will restart Monday through Saturday in the Fortuna-Foothills as a deviation checkpoint, with connections to YCAT Orange Route 2/2A at Arizona Western College.

This route provides door-to-door service throughout the Fortuna-Foothills area. Fares range from $2 to $4 with discounts for seniors, persons with disabilities and

students

Passengers can call 30 minutes before the bus arrives at a specific area in the Fortuna-Foothills to have the bus pick them up or drop them off at their location.

Or Fortuna-Foothills passengers may board the bus at a scheduled bus stop in the area.

The WelltonCAT door-to-door on-demand service now operates every Friday between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. With service anywhere within the town limits, WelltonCAT has been expanded to serve Tacna as well as the Foothills Walmart and destinations along South Frontage Road.

Passengers can simply call 15 minutes prior to pick-up and the bus will pick up and take them anywhere within Wellton. The fare is $2 with discounts for seniors, students and persons with disabilities.

In addition, the YCAT Vanpool program has started with $300 of YCIPTA funds going towards the cost of a van for commuters traveling to employment sites throughout the county. Currently, 15 vans are on the road traveling to various destinations, including Yuma Proving Grounds. Two contractors - vRide and Enterprise Rideshare - are providing the service.
