A handful of new California state laws take effect July 1. Here are a few of them:
Tattoos AB 300 Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco
Imposes minimum statewide standards for sterilization, sanitation and safety of tattoo, body piercing and permanent cosmetic businesses.
Recycling AB 341 Wes Chesbro, D-Arcata
Requires businesses and apartment buildings with five or more units to arrange for recycling if they generate more than four cubic yards of waste each week.
Health clubs SB 127 Ron Calderon, D-Montebello
Extends requirements that health studios have automatic external defibrillators and meet training and maintenance standards.
Food stamps AB 69 Jim Beall, D-San Jose
Allows counties to use the Social Security Administration benefits database to determine seniors eligible for food stamps.
Health insurance SB 222 Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa and Elaine Alquist, D-Santa Clara
Requires all individual health insurance policies to provide coverage for maternity services. new laws 2012
Bullying AB 9 Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco
Requires school anti-bullying policies to include specific complaint procedures and alternative discipline policies.
Salvaged vehicles AB 1215 Bob Blumenfield, D-Woodland Hills
Description: Requires used vehicle dealers to participate in program to flag salvaged or junk and raises the maximum document-processing fee of all vehicles.
Welfare AB 959 Brian Jones, R-Santee
In an effort to reduce the number of re-applications processed, gives welfare and food stamp recipients an extra month to file required quarterly reports.
Tax delinquents AB 1424 Henry Perea, D-Fresno
Requires the state to suspend occupational, professional, or driver's licenses of the state’s largest tax delinquents.
Foie gras SB 1520 John Burton, D-San Francisco
Bans the culinary delicacy, the first in the nation to do so. Foie gras is created by force-feeding ducks or geese through funnel-like tubes until their livers grow more than 10 times normal size.
