Nogales border crossing adds inspection lanes

Sep 02, 2012 10:12 AM
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The number of inspection lanes dedicated to commercial trucks entering the U.S. through Nogales has doubled as a 5-year expansion of the Mariposa Port of Entry continues.
Nogales Port Director Guadalupe Ramirez says eight lanes are now open for commercial trucks hauling everything from aircraft parts to produce. Six out of 12 planned passenger vehicle lanes are also open.
The Port of Entry is the third-busiest land crossing in the nation and handles more than 70% of the produce imported from Mexico.
The Arizona Daily Star reports the port is now processing about 700 trucks a day. The numbers increase to about 1,800 trucks during the winter produce season.
The U.S. General Services Administration expects to complete the $213 million expansion project in 2014.
